I spotted this New Zealand falcon (
Falco novaeseelandiae) in the bush of Bledisloe Park, near Massey University, with a live
starling in its talons. I was alerted to its presence high in a tree because a pair of tuis were flying around emitting loud alarm calls.
As I watched, it suddenly fell out of the tree, and I managed to get a grab shot as it stretched its wings and flew. I thought I had lost it, but the tuis followed it
and led me to where it had landed on a branch on another tree, down near the Turitea Stream. As I watched, the falcon killed and proceeded to eat the starling,
and then cleaned itself before settling down for a rest.
